A VCF file is used for the exchange of digital business cards. VCF is an acronym for VCard File, being VCard the standard created in 1996, it is a practically universal file, so you can use it to import your contacts back on another mobile whether it be Android, an iPhone or even a feature phone of past year. Of course, Sometimes it is difficult to locate the file to fulfill its true function.

This is a text file with all the contact information, one after the other, included and classified by using certain code names for each field. The possible photos of the contact are included within the file itself. VCF files are usually attached to email messages, however they can be exchanged in many other ways, such as on the World Wide Web, multimedia messages, WhatsApp or via QR codes. As stated above, they can contain name, address, phone numbers, URLs, logos, photos, and even audio clips.

A vCard allows you to send contact information in a format that can be easily read in other email programs. A vCard is saved as a .VCF file, which is the Internet standard for identifying VCF files. When a vCard is sent, its .VCF file is sent with the message as an attachment.

Since data in VCF file is plain text it is possible to open VCF file with any text editor. But in order to correctly parse all fields stored in VCF file a specialized software is better. Below is a list of online software which can open VCF files and add contact information stored in it to the corresponding contact database.

Open VCF File on Windows OS

• Try double clicking on a VCF file in Windows File Explorer.
• If the VCF file reading software is associated correctly then the file will open
• If the file did not open you should navigate to Google Contacts.
• To open VCF file in Google Contacts you need to click "Import" in the left sidebar and click "Select File" button
• Contacts from VCF file will be imported to your Google Contacts list.

Structure of a VCF file

Below is an example of VCF file opened as plain text. As you can see all fields in it are readable but some additional parsing is required to correctly import the data. Still it is quite easy to copy/paste necessary fields from VCF file openeds in the text mode.
